About Louisville Area Fiber and Textile Artists (LAFTA)

Founded in 1995, LAFTA is an organization of local visual artists whose work encompasses an array of surface design and construction techniques.  Its two-fold mission is to provide on-going support to its members and to increase awareness of the broad field of fiber arts.

LAFTA currently has a membership of more than 90 artists whose work includes: art quilting; assemblage, collage and multi-media; basketry; beading; doll-making; fabric dyeing, painting, stenciling, and stamping; felt-making; hand- or machine embroidery; knitting and crocheting; paper-making and printing; punch needle; rug hooking; wearable art; weaving and tapestry.

To showcase the diversity of memberswork, LAFTA organizes exhibitions with various regional galleries.  In the past few years, group shows have been presented at Actors Theatre Gallery, the Carnegie Center for Art and History, the Jewish Community Center, the Louisville Water Tower, as well as Gallery 104.

Membersengagement with social issues has been demonstrated through the production and contribution of quilts and wall-hangings to non-profit organizations such as the Home of the Innocents, the Family Place, the James Graham Brown Cancer Center and Hosparus.   LAFTA also provides awards for fiber art at several annual art competitions and exhibitions.

Membership is open to all persons who are interested in working in fiber and textile art and sharing their knowledge with others.  For more information or inquiries about purchases, contact LAFTA through its website at www.laftalouisville.org.
